High Fiber Content - A Reason For The Acai Berries' Health Benefits

By: Steve Charles

Among all the berries of the world, acai berries may count as the highest in fiber content. The acai berries have approximately 52% of carbohydrates in them. Among these carbohydrates, the greatest share is of fibrous carbohydrates. If measured only for the amount of fiber in them, it is seen that the acai berries have 44.2% of it. This is certainly a commendable amount, and becomes an important reason for several of the health benefits that the acai berries provide to the human body.

1. The first benefit of the high fiber content is that it helps the food to be digested more easily. Since most of the acai berries are fiber, they increase the rate of digestion at the ingestion stage itself. Most food that enters the stomach is already partially digested when fiber content is high in them.

2. The next benefit, progressively, of the high fiber content is that it helps food to retain itself for a longer time in the digestive system. Fiber contains cellulose, a material that is needed for binding the food together. When the food is bound in thus manner, it does not immediately move into the colon, which is the large intestine from which the food prepares itself for elimination. Instead, it remains for a longer time in the stomach and the small intestine. This allows the enzymes from the digestive system to work upon the food more completely so that the digestion is almost perfect.

3. As the enzyme work better on the food, the food is also able to be assimilated better into the bloodstream. Resultantly, the body is able to get more benefits of the various nutrients that are present in the food.

4. The high content of fiber is absolutely beneficial in the proper elimination of wastes from the body. The cellulose which binds the undigested food takes care that this food is properly eliminated from the colon, seeing to it that the movement of bowels is proper and complete.

5. Because of this, food is not retained in the colon. If the person has low fiber content in the diet, there is a chance that undigested food gets retained in the colon (this is quite a common occurrence in people who have frequent constipations). These are the people who would need detoxification and colon cleansing treatments at a later stage. On the other hand, people who eat fiber-rich foods have good movement of bowels with no retention of undigested toxic matter in their bodies. So they stay healthier.

Acai berries thus improve several aspects of the human health through this one main point - high fiber content. The berries ensure that the person remains healthy in more ways than one. Today, when it has been established that the route to good health is through a healthy digestive system, this is an important point to note. Indeed, the South Americans, where acai is a native fruit, enjoy a better longevity. It may well be that their diet which significantly comprises of the acai berries is responsible for that.
